District Town Hall,
Cologne-Muelheim

Between the recently designed Wiener Platz and Gerling-Hochhaus a new town hall was created. Alongside the pure town hall function the new building accommodates a library, a branch of the adult education college and a privately operated canteen with bistro.

The seven storey town hall surrounds an inner courtyard open towards the high rise building at the back. In the courtyard an elliptical building – accommodating the adult education centre – pierces the U shaped office building and marks the main entrance to the town hall. From the Wiener Platz the public space flows along both sides of the building through the hall. The courtyard as intermediate area between the outer skin of the building and the inside is covered by a reflecting semitransparent roof and houses public facilities such as the library and reception.
