Construction site 82a/b in Hamburg’s Baakenhafen District is characterised by its location directly adjoining the Gerda-Gmelin-Platz in the west and the proximity to the underground railway station “Hafen-City Universität”, resulting in an outstanding visibility and location. Providing innovative residential offerings, the ‘Manufakturwerk’ and a close interlocking of living and working in the field of the creative industry, the CreativeBlocks are intended to be a markedly urban residential and production location, which had to be architecturally elaborated in the context of an architectural competition.
The concept for the subarea 82b (9,600 m² of publicly and privately funded housing as well as 3,400 m² commercial uses/Manufakturwerk/market hall) by kister scheithauer gross architekten und stadtplaner was, after being awarded one of two 2nd prizes and the subsequent revision, recommended for execution. The “stimulating and original design with inspiring approaches” – according to the jury, which included Prof. Jörn Walter, Prof. Jörg Aldinger, Prof. Jürgen Bruns-Berentelg et.al. – provides attractive apartment floor plans with effective spatial arrangements. The layout of the Manufakturwerk is compact, the spatial proportions were harmoniously elaborated and the ground floor zone flexibly adapted to the uses. The façades are striking: The materiality of the two-storey market hall is reminiscent of classic market halls, with the cladding of columns being made of blackened stainless steel sheet and visible screw elements. For the residential section above, the architects propose a “jade-green” ceramic façade consisting of vertical elements, which lends the building a delicate and elegant texture..
