12th December 2011 second price for ksg´s fourth Comprehensive School Aachen

The competition for the redevelopment and extension of the fourth comprehensive school in Aachen is decided. ksg´s proposal is nominated with the 2nd price.

We are delighted about the great result and the award. Prof. Kister describes the design as such: ´The roof of the lowered sports hall, a kind of staircase parallel to Sandkaulstreet, provides the urban access to the school. An inviting gesture as much as an urban threshold. The topography is taken advantage of, preventing the sport complex to appear as a barrier of the school towards the street and enhancing the interconnection of the two schools. Both, sports hall and canteen are easily reached whereas the roof of the gymnasium forms the common playground. The playground turns into a local square, which can be used by the public and for public events. The school site is part of the public realm, merging the school and the local district.

Inside, the two towers are supplemented as compact as possible and are united into a composition by the canteen as a third volume. The aim is a homogeneous, coherent whole.´
