Two educational institutions are moving into the new technical university, die Dresden State Academy and the Protestant Academy for Social Work.
Today, the cooperation kister scheithauer gross architects and urban planners GmbH Rohdecan Architects GmbH are celebrating the hand over of the new complex of the Technical University Dresden. In the future the complex will offer new spaces for the Dresden State Academy and the Protestant Academy for Social Work.
The new built together with the redevelopment of the existing buildings create a contemporary campus ensemble right in the heart of Dresden, appropriate to current teaching standards. The urban surrounding is characterized by the public building at Sachsenplatz. The river Elbe and the Albertbridge are within a few minutes walk.
The design responds to the existing urban structure - a striking solitary block marks the end of the academic area. The square closes up towards Gerokstreet, creating a tranquil courtyard – the new heart of the campus.
The new building offers three functions: workshops and laboratories of the institute for wood processing are at ground floor level, vast ceiling heights and convenient delivery facilities determine the design. The open staircase leads to the cafeteria and the canteen of the area; a south-facing terrace provides the setting for a relaxed campus atmosphere, benefitting from its sheltered position. The campus library is on the second level – all key functions are positioned around the central court yard.
The façade is an arbitrary composition of openings. Dark concrete blocks and light plaster surfaces are giving a contrasting look to the structure.
The existing buildings have been carefully redeveloped and fire protection has been enhanced. The subtle colours of the inside highlight the qualities of the historic elements.
Particular areas, like the chapel for the protestant academy for social work and the large auditorium are particular points of emphasis.
A total of 2.500sqm net floor area within the new built and around 6.600sqm net floor area in the existing part have been generated. The high quality outdoor settings of the courtyard with seating spend resting qualities.
